Clifford Michelson Scholarship

IMG_0400

Leif is awarded the Clifford Michelson Scholarship. You will know him by the sound of his trumpet that lifts our worship to a whole new level. But his service has reached far beyond the walls of Our Saviors. Leif volunteers his own time each summer to work at a camp for the visually impaired. He also serves alongside his mother as he serves at the Care and Share Food Pantry.

Leif’s scholarship presented OSLC with a wonderful gift this year. Each year the scholarship committee receives the applicants anonymously. They do not know which name is attached to which application. After deciding how to award the funds, the students are then paired to the specific fund that will fulfill their scholarship. This year presented an incredible story when we went to pair our scholarships with our students, because the name of one of the scholarship funds, came through in Leif’s faith statement. Leif and Doris Michelson are the prime example of how intergenerational relationships help form the faith for our youth. Leif and Doris have a relationship that has nothing to do with family, or a special circumstance that brought them together. They simply come together in faith and it has made Leif who he is today. Leif can regularly be found in Doris’s living room after school. They celebrate each other’s birthdays together. And Doris herself can be found at the end of the bleachers to watch Leif’s games and music events, even on the most bitterly cold nights. This relationship is completely their own. It didn’t come out of a program or an initiative put on by the staff. It happened through the work of the Spirit in Doris and Leif. We are proud to present Leif with the Clifford Michelson Scholarship. Congratulations Leif!

Adolf Marking Scholarship

Mariah Arneson is awarded the Adolf Marking Scholarship. You would recognize Mariah by the sound of her flute coming from the balcony as she accompanied soloists and graced us with wonderful music over the years. She has also been a wonderful addition to our high school youth band. One of her fondest memories from Our Saviors was her trip to the National Youth Gathering in New Orleans. From there she has made it a point to live out her faith with the gifts God has given her in music. Congratulations Mariah

Ken and Norma Piper Scholarship

13 (1024x863)

Allie Skrentny is awarded the Ken and Norma Piper Scholarship. Allie has been an extensive participant here at Our Savior’s over the last 4 years. She has been a 4 time participant in the Sounds Like Love music festival in the cities. She was also a member of each mission team including the National Youth Gathering in New Orleans, Topsail Beach North Carolina, Ponce Puerto Rico, and she will travel with us to Atlanta this summer. What you may know Allie most for, is her Senior Exit Project, the Summer Lunch Program. It was an incredible inspiration to watch Allie come home from Puerto Rico last summer and pour her heart into her SEP project. Her eyes were opened to the effects of hunger on children, and it was truly wonderful to witness her put her faith into action when she came home. Congratulations Allie!

When did you know you would be a Pastor?

When the Assistant to the Bishop told me I was going to be. I just wanted to work in the church. We didn’t think Pastor was an option. It was never on the table with all the schooling and the finance, and just the logistics of it all, but then Jenny said it could work, so I did and never looked back.

Pastor Jean

When did you know you would become a Pastor?

It happened over a period of time. Mid 2nd year in college to mid 3rd year. I went to college with the idea of going into medicine, but even though I had the ability I didn’t have the desire. I just didn’t want to study biology for hours. I realized I did like spending hours reading about history/poli sci. I switched to economics and I did ok, I got As and Bs but there was always a feeling that I would flunk out in the next exam. Every class was a struggle. Then I visited a seminary and I thought ‘this is easy.’ I remember saying to myself ‘I can do this.’ It just felt right. I thought I finally figured out what God was doing. My way wasn’t working, I had to let go of my way.

When did you first come to Christ?

This has been hard because there is no “ah ha!” moment that I can pinpoint – no date on the calendar. Growing up we just went to church and Sunday School every week, it was part of the routine, it was part of life. And that really did become “part of life”. I knew that Jesus loved me and was always with me no matter what. I am fed by that, comforted by that, believe that … Jesus loves me … always has, always will.

Pastor Jean

When did you first come to Christ?

Hard to tell when I “came to Christ.” I don’t remember. I don’t remember because my recollection of knowing Jesus, knowing what God has done for me in Jesus, goes back as far as I can go. Those were stories shared with me by parents and grandparents, taught and learned in Sunday School, proclaimed in worship, and read about in my children’s Bible.

Maybe a more significant moment came somewhere around age 8 or 9 when I realized the impact of my baptism – that in my baptism, at the age of 3 weeks, I did not come to Christ – Christ came to me! I remember as a child, an 8 or 9 year old, grasping that and realizing how that was God’s grace in action – Jesus coming to me, even though I was hardly in a position to come to him. That’s what grace is to me – God acts, and I receive.

When has Jesus surprised you?

After my fathers death, I never thought I’d be “normal” again. But I am-this surprised me. The moments that I still cry, that come out of nowhere, they surprise me.Stacey

When has Jesus surprised you?

We aren’t haunted by hardships- hunger, illness…we have financial wellbeing. We are so grateful for all we have.Karla

When has Jesus surprised you?

When the doctor diagnosed our son with nephritis, my mom told us to pray at his bed. The next day he was well.Norma
